The paintings that survived the fire
You can virtually sense the presence of history in the Abildgaard Room, where three old kings appear in majestic paintings. The three paintings by the Danish artist Abildgaard originally hung in the Great Hall of the first Christiansborg Palace. They are the only pictures from an impressive series of ten paintings that survived the great fire at the palace in 1794. If you take a close look you can see the damage that the paintings sustained in the fire. They are also the only paintings in the present Christiansborg Palace that have been preserved from the first Christiansborg Palace.
Explore the exotic animals in the room
The colourful and richly detailed decorative fields on doors, panelling and furniture were created by Valdemar Andersen, who is perhaps best known for his famous advertising posters for the Copenhagen Zoo. In the Abildgaard Room, he has playfully incorporated animals into the decor. The similarity between his decorations in the Abildgaard Room and his ads for the Copenhagen Zoo is easy to recognize.
