The Royal Costume Wardrobe
In the Royal Costume Wardrobe, both children and adults can try on our beautiful costumes from different historical periods, such as the Renaissance and the Middle Ages.
The Royal Workroom is full of the humming of sewing machines and the clacking of knitting needles. Here, some 40 volunteers make replicas of historical costumes and decorations for the many different events at Koldinghus.
When you enter the Royal Workroom, you will feel as if you have travelled back in time. Here, some 40 volunteers work to create replicas of historical costumes, inspired by the royal wardrobe. To the sound of humming sewing machines and clacking knitting needles, they sew stately gowns, elegant uniforms and lavishly decorated capes. Every single detail is carefully selected to represent royal styles and traditional craftsmanship.
The workroom is located on the third floor in the North Wing – exactly where the queen's personal tailor's workroom was, according to floor plans from 1740, when the royal family stayed at Koldinghus. Today, the workroom is open to visitors, and you are welcome to stop by and experience the living craft up close.
Many of the beautiful costumes that are made in the workroom take on new life in the Royal Costume Wardrobe. Here, children and adults alike can try on costumes and have a first-hand experience of history – whether they are dreaming of being a princess, a soldier or a court jester. The costumes come in many different sizes, and they are carefully made to be both authentic and pleasant to wear.
The Royal Costume Wardrobe is part of the learning services at Koldinghus and is ver popular in connection with events, school visits and theme days. It gives the audience a chance to engage actively in history and experience it first-hand. The cooperation between the Royal Workroom and the Royal Costume Wardrobe creates a unique experience that lets curios visitor play with historical fashion.
