Private guided tour

The face of power

Rosenborg Castle has an exceptional collection of royal portraits that not only put a face to the individuals of the Danish monarchy but also serve as important sources for our understanding of the nature of the monarchy from the 16th to the 19th century.

Highlights of this tour

Take a tour of the royal art collection at Rosenborg Castle and see how portraits and paintings can shed light on the history of the Danish monarchy during the 17th and 18th centuries. This tour will give you insight into how the monarchy has used art as a showcase of power and splendour.

This guided tour takes you through the three floors of the castle, where you find an exception art collection. We see works of art portraying Christian IV and illustrating how he carefully shaped his image as a magnificent Renaissance king. See how Queen Sophie Amalie placed her own portrait in the ceiling of her bedchamber in the guise of the Greek goddess Hera, and hear the story of Christian VII, who, despite his unstable mind, is depicted in full royal splendour.
