The beautiful and richly diamond-encrusted brooch is shaped like the Russian imperial crown. The brooch was created to mark the occasion of Nicholas II's coronation in St Petersburg, in 1896. It is one of 18 coronation brooches that the new Emperor gave to the Russian grand duchesses to celebrate his accession to the throne.

One of the recipients was Grand Duchess Anastasia, who in 1879 had married the Grand Duke of Mecklenburg-Schwerin. After Grand Duchess Anastasia's death, the brooch passed to her daughter the later Queen Alexandrine of Denmark, Christian X's consort and the great-grandmother of HM King Frederik X.

Queen Alexandrine's granddaughter Princess Elisabeth left the brooch to the Royal Danish Collection in her last will and testament.
