Royal love
Love is often complicated – and with the addition of politics, significant age gaps, absolute power and the many temptations of life at the royal court, royal love life can be anything but boring.
Highlights of the tour
On this tour, we focus on royal personalities, gender roles and romantic passion at the royal court. Love is often complicated – and with the addition of politics, significant age gaps, absolute power and the many temptations of life at the royal court, royal love life can be anything but boring.
The tour follows the trail of piquant stories through the castle. From Christian IV, who was quite a ladies' man, to the colourful Queen Sophie Amalie, who liked to party, and who received a very special ring from her husband, Frederik III, to taunt her for her infidelity.
Hear the story of Frederik IV, who committed bigamy not just once but twice – a crime that would have been punishable by death, had he not been the absolute king. You can also see parts of the King's collection of erotica, which is now in display in the Glass Cabinet. The tour also includes the story of what is perhaps the best-known royal love affair in Danish history, between J. F. Struensee and Caroline Mathilde, who was married to Christian VII.
After visiting all three floors of the castle, the tour concludes in the Basement, where you can see Sophie Amalie's ring, and the Treasury, where the magnificent Danish crown jewels are on display alongside the royal crowns and regalia.
